Introductory Course
This course is a series of weekly lectures and seminars on Psychoanalytic Theories and Concepts, extending over 2 terms of 10 evenings each. It includes an exploration of the unconscious and its expression in human development and relationships.
The course is of interest to anyone with a personal or professional interest in psychoanalytic ideas, and would also form a valuable introduction for anyone considering a professional training as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist.
Course content
First term
- Theories of the mind
- Theorists covered include: Freud, Jung, Klein, Bion, Winnicott, the British Independent School, and contemporary writers
Second term
- Clinical phenomena and concepts which both inform, and have arisen from, theories covered in the first term
- Concepts covered include: transference and countertransference, projective identification, the clinical frame, the use of dreams and interpretation
- We also examine the application of the concepts to a variety of clinical contexts
Course structure
Each evening will comprise:
- A lecture or seminar, given by a professional member of SIP or by a specialist guest speaker
- A discussion group, to which participants' personal and work experience will make an important contribution
To help ensure continuity of discussion, all participants are encouraged to attend all the lectures and seminars.
Reading will be recommended to support your learning.
There are no academic requirements or assignments to complete.

The course runs on Wednesdays at 6:30pm – 9:00pm
Autumn Term: September 28th – December 7th 2011
Spring Term: January 18th – March 28th 2012
Each term includes a one week break in which there is no meeting (October 26th and February 15th).

Fees
Fees for the next course will be decided later
As a guidance, fees for the current course were £600, with a deposit of £60 payable at time of application.
If there are no places left when you apply, your deposit will be returned. Otherwise it is non-refundable.
If you withdraw between July and September, we will refund half the fee, unless we can fill your place by someone on the waiting list or a late applicant, in which case your fee will be returned to you. If you withdraw after the start of September your full fee will be retained.
