Observational Skills in Ordinary Life
A one term course bringing psychoanalytic understanding to ordinary experience
As part of ordinary human relationships and interaction, we not only observe what goes on around us, but have ideas, thoughts, fantasies and feelings in relation to the events we observe and are involved in.
This course involves:
- An introductory session introducing how the course works.
- Nine meetings in which participants present observations drawn from their everyday life. We will discuss the observations together, including our responses and associations to them.
- Some reading may be recommended along the way.
The group(s) will be led by a practising psychoanalytic psychotherapist. The aim of the discussion is to give attention to things we often do subliminally, applying psychoanalytic thought, and seeing what understanding emerges.
There are no assignments to complete.
Engaged observation is an essential tool of the practising psychotherapist, linking the functions of attending, thinking and feeling. This course is not part of SIP's training to be a psychoanalytic psychotherapist, but would of particular interest to those who are considering training.
You may learn about yourself during the course, but it is not a substitute for personal therapy.
