About SIP Dialogues

In June 2022, Severnside Institute for Psychotherapy will inaugurate an annual series of ‘Dialogues’ during which guest speakers will explore a subject or idea, each from the perspective of a different psychoanalytic school(s) of thoughts.

The idea of Dialogues has emerged over the years through debates within our organisation, as well as a response to the historical moment we live in where polarisation leads to constant conflict and breakdown, and is rooted in a tension against fundamentalism and the tyranny (or, as Freud said ‘the narcissim’) of small differences.

We hope to create an exchange, a back-and-forth, a mutual understanding and even some common grounds, in a safe space where questions can be asked and differences acknowledged without anyone feeling threatened.

About the speakers

Dany Nobus is Professor of Psychoanalytic Psychology at Brunel University London, Founding Scholar of the British Psychoanalytic Council, and former Chair and Fellow of the Freud Museum London. In 2017, Dany was awarded the Sarton medal of the University of Ghent for his outstanding contributions to psychoanalytic historiography.

Adam Phillips is a practicing psychoanalyst , a visiting professor of English at the University of York and former chief psychologist at London’s Charing Cross Hospital.  He has been described as ‘Britain’s foremost psychoanalytic writer’ (New Yorker) and praised as ‘one of the finest prose stylists at work in the language, an Emerson of our time’ (John Banville).
