The Severnside Institute for Psychotherapy (SIP) was founded in May 1985 by a group of psychoanalytic psychotherapists. Our aims are to promote and develop psychoanalytic and psychodynamic psychotherapy in Bristol, Bath, and the surrounding areas of the south and south-west.

SIP has members in Bristol, Bath, and Cheltenham, and in the counties of Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Wiltshire, Somerset, Oxfordshire, Devon, Dorset, Cardiff, Gwent, and Swansea. Private psychotherapy is arranged with individual members. Training is based at Bristol.

SIP is a member of the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC), a professional association which represents the profession of psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

Professionally trained psychodynamic and psychoanalytic psychotherapists are welcome to join SIP. See our membership page.

The Institute was registered as a charity in 1999 under the code 1079390. It is also a limited company (3799698).

The SIP’s main objectives are to provide and assist in the provision of psychotherapeutic and related support services to members of the public in need thereof. As a charity, we are therefore responsible for our own fund raising. We are financed through our membership fees and donations from members. Training costs are met by the fees paid by trainees. We also raise money through fund raising opportunities where appropriate, such as our public lecture.
